My last week in the 2nd trimester! I'm down to 98 days until my EDD (estimated due date). Wow!! That just sounds crazy to me. Double digits!
The biggest thing that's been going on this week has been what seems to be an emotional rollercoaster. I pretty much feel like I could cry at the drop of a hat. And probably the biggest -- having overwhelming feelings of wanting to hold our daughter and getting no satisfaction for this right now! My feelings of nesting have been super high -- I was convinced on Friday we needed to go get her more clothes because I feel so unprepared (I mentioned less than 100 days, give or take, right?). So Emile and I took a trip to Babies R Us and got her a dress, a sleeper, four onesies and two pairs of pants to go over the onesies for "lounging". And because it's hard not to buy more cute things while there, we also got her a little stuffed lamb and two board books. I think I'll start feeling more prepared once we move into our house on Friday and can start setting up the nursery! I can't wait.
Not much has changed other than that -- I continue to struggle getting up and down now, can't get comfortable in bed, and run into everything with my belly, including Emile. But no complaints -- it's all worth it!
I haven't had any more pains in my abdomin like I did last week so it may have just been round ligament pain instead of Braxton Hicks contractions -- who knows. So many women on the baby chat line that I visit seem to be experiencing BH contractions frequently at this stage already but I'm not which is great. I'm sure they'll come in time. Overall, it seems my pregnancy, compared to others I've read or heard about, has been pretty low key! This week mostly consisted of her kicking me and doing what feels like a few rolls while kicking me at the same time -- and of course, while I'm trying to sleep! :)

Week 26 -- Double Digits

Week 25
She has now formed all 33 rings, 150 joints and 1,000 ligaments in the structure of her spine. The surfactant that is essential for lung function after birth is also beginning to develop. All five senses are fully developed. She's close to 2 lbs now and starting to fill out!
I'm having a harder time putting my socks on and taking my pant legs off etc. I think I make more noises now too when I move around :). I'm just flat out getting big! I think today I may have also felt my first Braxton-Hicks contraction which I've read can start around this time -- a definite tightening of my belly that relaxed in the middle of the day. But maybe it was something else. We'll see if it happens again.
Other than that, Emile and I have been preparing for our move into our new house. Today we went furniture shopping at a million square foot store called Furnituresouth Land near Greensboro (about an hour drive away). They had more furniture in one 4 story store than I've seen anywhere and it is all 40-45% off suggested retail prices! We found a great living room set and office furniture. We're probably going to go back after we close on the house to get these pieces. I'll need the office furniture sooner than later since I'm not telecommuting from home. It will also be nice to have living room furniture so when people come to visit they have somewhere to sit and the room isn't bare when you walk in. We're going to work on decorate one room at a time over the next few years (after getting these first two sets of items).

Week 24
Emile has noticed people are constantly looking at my belly now :) It's kind of funny how people immediately go to looking down at my stomach. According to my "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" book, my uterus is now the size of a soccor ball -- that's amazing!
Emile felt our little girl kick this past Wednesday (23w 4d)!! I'm was really excited he finally got to feel her kick. Now if she'd cooperate more so he could feel it again and get more used to the strange sensation. He at first thought it was just me having gas! :)
I also had my first prenatal appointment with one of the doctors who may actually deliver our baby. I'm going to the Blue Ridge OB/Gyn practice in Raleigh. It was recommended by a number of women. Everyone there was super friendly (as seems to be the case in North Carolina). The doctor I met with, Dr. Corvin, was great -- she actually took time to ask me if I had questions and waiting for me to answer before moving on (Dr. Chrisomalis tended to cut me off and Dr. Jin always brushed my questions off). I felt really comfortable with everyone there. There are about 8 doctors in the practice and because you never know who will be on-call when I actually go into labor, I will be meeting with each of them over the next few appointments. This is very different than in NYC where I had the same doctor at the practice the whole time. I think this is a great idea given that it will be nicer at least having met the doctor who may be in the delivery room! I did find out that the Rex Hospital where I'll be delivering allows rooming-in (she can stay in the room with me vs. going back to a general nursery area) and they have lactation counclers on hand. I will be going to tour the hospital in the next month or so to get the lay of the land! (and so we know where the heck where going when contractions kick in and Emile and I are freaked out). Because we got here so late in my pregnancy, the Rex Hospital birthing classes are all full already. Luckily, there is another option through the Carolina Childbirth Classes. We have signed up for the overview birthing class and baby care class starting February 25th. It will be twice a week for two weeks. I'm looking forward to it!
Today, Emile and I also went to the Women's Birth & Wellness Center in Chapel Hill. They are one of the few stores around that carries cloth diapers (you usually have to order them on-line). I wanted to see the different options before we ordered. It was very helpful. The women there walked through the different types (Chinese pre-fold, Kissaluvs, or BumGenius 3.0 were the main ones). Cloth diapers have come along way since Emile and I were babies -- no more pins or plastic covers. With the BumGenius 3.0, you get a fitted cloth diaper inside a waterproof liner all in one that seals using velcro. The Chinese pre-fold are similar to what we used when babies but now you put a diaper cover (not like the bulky ones when we were younger) over it that is more stylish and uses velco (still has elastic around the legs like when we were babies). The Kissaluvs are fitted cloth diapers (unlike Chinese pre-folds) but also require one of the diaper covers over them. The BumGenius ones last for all stages (they have snaps to change the size) whereas you have to get different sizes depending on the age of the baby for the Chinese pre-fold and Kissaluvs. I'm going to look into getting a few of each to try them out and see what works best with our little one!

Week 23 -- Hello North Carolina
As you can see from the photo, the shirt I started out wearing for these photos back around week 4 is no longer covering my belly all the way. This is the case for almost everything now -- nothing fits even remotely close to how it used to. My winter jacket will hopefully make it though the season if I don't button all the buttons anymore.I felt the baby kick my hand last Sunday (22w1d) which was a great feeling. Now if I could only get her to do those kicks when Emile has his hand on my belly! I'm sure that will happen soon.
She definitely seems to be more active after I ate or drank something cold. We'll have to focus on trying after those instances.
I've started getting leg cramps in the middle of the night which I have read can happen during pregnancy. I will definitely be increasing my intake of bananas as that's supposed to help. Luckily, I have yet to kick Emile or the cats during one of these leg spasm episodes. I'm starting to not be able to sleep as long as I used to. I'm not sure if that's due to being pregnant or if it's related to all that's going on right now in our lives. I have also noticed that the linea negra (line down the middle of a pregnant woman's belly) has started to form -- it's faint but definitely there.
This week has been incredibly hectic for Emile and I. I finished up at my job in Newark, NJ and packed up my office to start telecommuting from home beginning on Monday. The movers came on Wednesday, packed and loaded all our belongings, including the pump for the air mattress we were going to sleep on that night which means we now own two air mattresses. Thursday, Emile and I, with the two cats in tow, drove for about 10 hours to Durham, North Carolina (takes a lot longer to get down here when you have to stop to deal with cat issues!). We're now settled into our temporary apartment which is significantly better than what we had in NYC -- two bedroom, dishwasher, washer/dryer. The area is great -- a lot of stores nearby. So far in the two days we've been here, we've gotten new driver licenses, registered our car, picked up our car from storage, went out to walk through our new house again (we're so happy with our choice!), went grocery shopping at two stores (Trader Joes and Harris Teeter -- it is fabulous to have a grocery store nearby again that has a lot of selection), went to Best Buy twice, Petsmart, Sprint, and Target (yay!! Target is nearby again :). To say the least, we're exhausted. I think tomorrow will entail lounging around and reading on cloth diaper brands to choose from.

Week 22 -- Goodbye NYC!
I am now done with my 5th month of pregnancy -- wow!! These last few weeks have gone by fast. Three months to go! I've started feeling her kick a lot more now and more on a schedule, although from what I've read, the kicks don't necessarily have to be consistent or every day like the doctors expect in the 3rd trimester. But I definitely can tell a pattern -- she seems to start kicking around 11:30 p.m. and again around 3:30 a.m. So I'm guessing, from what I've read, these will probably be some of the hours I'm up with her once she's born. :)
She's probably around 7.5 inches long now and by the end of this week getting close to, if not more than, a pound! She's starting to get plumper now. Her body and face are starting to take on more of an appearance of what she'll look like as an infant -- how exciting!
Our growing family is moving to North Carolina this Thursday, January 23rd!!!! We can't believe how fast things have moved over the last week and a half. The car Emile bought in Minnesota over Christmas has arrived in NC. The packers are coming on Wednesday. On Thursday, we pack up what we'll need for a month in a rental car with the two cats and head to NC. We will be staying in temporary corporate housing in Durham, NC until February 22nd at which point we will be closing on our first house!!! We're so excited. We just received confirmation from our realtor that the seller signed off on the paper work. We have just bought a 4 bedroom, two-story home in Wake Forest, NC. And we'll be moving in with enough time to set-up the nursery before our little girl arrives! The link on the right to "Our photos" will take you to photos of our new house (as well as photos of our wedding and honeymoon).
Emile will be starting his new job with GSK on February 4th and I will begin working from home starting January 28th. I will be still working for ENVIRON but from our home office. My previous boss in Los Angeles, Joe, is going to take me on as a telecommuting employee through our SoCal office. He has a number of other people telecommuting for him. I'm excited to be working with him and the SoCal group again. It's nice to have a boss who appreciates me and sees the value in keeping me as an employee. And I'll have a 30 second commute from our bed to the office!
The sad part -- we're leaving one of our favorite cities, New York City! I am very sad to be leaving the area, although extremely excited for all the new things coming up in NC and our new home. But unlike leaving CA, I think we'll miss NYC quite a bit. I'm going to miss:
- My weekend walks in Central Park around the Reservoir
- The Met
- Seeing all the skyscrapers in Midtown including the Empire State Building
- Shopping on 5th Avenue
- New York pizza
- All the amazing restaurant options
- Times Square
- Seeing Broadway musicals
- The convenience of the subway and the yellow cabs
- Hearing a different language around every corner
- The Brooklyn Bridge
- The Statue of Liberty
- New Year's Eve in Central Park
- Chunky Chicken Salad Sandwiches at Gracies
- Running in races in Central Park
- The MOMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney
- The Opera
- Chinatown
- Washington Square and Greenwich Village
- Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes
- SoHo
- The tall condo buildings on Park Ave
- St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rockefeller Center
And I'm sure I'm still missing a few! :)

Week 21
The only major change I've noticed this week is that I feel her kick more frequently and can kinda feel it on the outside of my body. I don't think others would be able tell as much yet though if you put your hand on my belly. I have also noticed the top of my belly button is starting to stick out! I thought this wouldn't happen until another 10 weeks from now but it's started. We'll see how long before the whole thing sticks out.
Our baby girl is about the size of a large banana right now (I know, strange that they compare baby sizes to fruit but helpful for visualization). She probably weighs around 10.5 ounces by now.
I had another anatomy ("big") ultrasound this past Thursday. Last time I went in on the 20th, they were not able to get a good view of her heart, spine, lungs, kidneys or hands. This time, the technician was able to see all these clearly except the heart. There was definitely 4 chambers of the heart as there should be but our daughter was already being stubborn and wouldn't roll over to be in the right position for the technician to verify everything related to the heart. I even drank 2 glasses of orange juice (sugar gets them moving more), walked around and rolled over to my left side while taking deep breathes, all in hopes she would roll over -- nope, she wasn't interested! So I will be going in again on January 22nd to try one more time to get a good view of her heart. The technician said everything looked great so far but they need to confirm those last few things to have a complete assessment. If she doesn't cooperate the next time, I'll need to go in for a fetal echo (not sure what that is yet). Below are some great photos of her spine and hands (5 fingers on each hand!). It's amazing the detail they can get! And she reconfirmed that she's a she. :)

Our other big news is we're moving! Emile has accepted a job with GlaxoSmithKline ("GSK") in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. We're so excited!! It's such a beautiful area! And we're looking into buying a house and will hopefully be placing an offer on one this week! We're moving on January 24th which is coming up incredibly soon. Luckily, my office is going to allow me to telecommute from home which will be great when the baby is born. I'm really excited for all the changes coming up in our very near future. We'll keep you posted as to which house we get.

Week 20 -- Half Way!
Unfortunately this week I've been feeling pretty horrible due to a bad cold I picked up over the holidays. A sore throat, being stuffed up and having an earache combined with a belly that's getting big has not made sleeping very productive the last few days. Hopefully, it clears up soon.
This week our daughter should be about 9 oz. and have a crown-to-rump length of about 6 inches. I'm getting big myself! I can definitely feel that the top of my uterus is now at or slightly above my belly button.
Now that Emile and I are getting closer to deciding where we'll be living next month, I'm going to start looking into birth plans and more ideas for girl names. We have picked out the bedding we like:
I love the lavender with butterfly look although we would definitely not have all this in the nursery -- way to much in one room. We'll probably get the sheets, dust ruffle, blanket, hamper, diaper stacker, valence and the walk squares.I also ordered my Amy Michelle diaper bag that I'm super excited about (link in the side bar).
I have a feeling the next 4.5 months is going to go very quickly!

Week 19 -- It's a ...
We had our "big" ultrasound on Thursday, December 20th. We decided to keep it a secret so we could surprise our families. The morning of the 20th, we went in for our anatomy ultrasound and found out we're having a girl. The technician, and later our doctor's nurse confirmed, that our little girl looks "normal" -- arms and legs the right length, brain looks good, face is in the right proportions, etc. The technician wasn't able to see the kidneys, chambers of the heart or spine in the position she was in so I have to go back on January 10th for another ultrasound. Our little girl weighs 7 oz. right now and is in the 50th percentile for her weight based on the day of our ultrasound (I was 17 weeks 5 days pregnant) -- so right on target. That night, we flew to Minneapolis for Christmas at Emile's parent's house. We told them we were having a girl by wrapping up a little dress with the ultrasound photo. We had them unwrap it -- Riet held up the dress for about a split second before she exclaimed "are you having a girl??!!!!" and proceeded to jump up with excitement.
We had to then keep it a secret for another week until we saw my family in person this past Thursday on December 27th. We told my family the same way -- wrapped up a dress with the ultrasound photo and had my parents open it together. My mom responded pretty much identically to Emile's mom -- held up the dress for a split second before exclaiming "are you having a girl?!!!" and then proceeded to get super excited and overjoyed. Apparently, my dad kept whispering to my mom while they were in bed that night "we're having a granddaughter!". It was great being able to tell our families in person that we're having a girl given that we've had to tell them most things about our pregnancy via telephone or webcam.
Today, I'm 19 weeks pregnant!! I definitely feel like I'm getting much bigger faster now!

Week 18 -- Month 5
YAY!! I've finished 4 months, on to month 5. Five months to go. This past week was great -- I'm pretty sure I felt the baby move on Tuesday (December 18, 17w3d). It felt like something was rolling right under my belly button and happened about 2-3 times. Always ended with a tingle through my belly button. Since then I've felt other "rolls" and maybe a kick or two occasionally. I probably won't feel the baby move consistently until a few weeks from now though. But it was really neat and exciting!According to the average weight gain charts, I'm doing pretty well for 18 weeks which I'm happy about although I'm starting to feel heavier in my stomach. I'm also getting more hungry again and definitely can't go more than a few hours without eating. I feel like I'm starting to grow again in my belly compared to last week where it didn't feel much different. The baby should be about 5-5.5 inches long and weigh around 6.5 ounces. You should be able to see the chambers of our baby's heart in an ultrasound now. His/her vocal cords should be fully formed also. Over the next week, our baby will start forming hair on his/her head and forming teeth buds.

Week 17
I'm slowly seeing my stomach get larger but overall there hasn't been much that has gone on this week. I'm still waiting to feel the baby move -- all the flutters I keep reading about! I'm looking forward to that! By the end of this week, my uterus will be the size of a cantaloupe or little larger.
This weekend, Emile and I checked out our first new home location -- Connecticut! We both really liked the area and could see ourselves raising our family there. We'll have to see how the next few weeks pan out.

Week 16
Month 2: Weeks 5-8
Month 3: Weeks 9-13
Month 4: Weeks 14-17
Month 5: Weeks 18-21
Month 6: Weeks 22-26
Month 7: Weeks 27-30
I've started getting super hungry again in the last few days and my stomach is itching. So I think the baby is going through another grow spurt. I'm excited that my baby bump is getting bigger and looking less like fat. All these changes are pretty exciting. The baby weighs probably about 2 3/4 ounces right now and by the end of this week will be about 3 1/2 ounces and the size of my hand spread open wide! Our baby now has soft hair, called lanugo, all over his/her body and has well formed fingernails. His/her (we're now saying "shim") legs are longer than the arms and all four can move a lot now! This week, "shim" will form a lot more body fat. Hopefully, soon, I'll be able to feel the baby move!
I had my 16 week doctor's appointment this past Wednesday. Dr. Jin confirmed that I'm type O- and thus, depending on Emile's blood type (if he's type A, B or O +), then I'll have to get the RhoGam shot at 28 weeks and after the baby is born. This isn't anything dangerous or to be worried about -- it's only preventive, to ensure my body doesn't form antibodies against the baby's blood if the baby's blood were to mix somehow with mine and was a + type. This could just cause problems with me getting pregnant in the future if I end up forming the antibodies. So they take precautions.
We also got to hear our baby's heartbeat again at the doctor's using a Doppler machine. It was so reassuring and comforting since I can't tell what's going on. Dr. Jin said I wasn't showing yet but we think she's crazy. Whether the baby is just pushing my stomach up and the baby's still below my bellybutton (which is the case) or whether the bump is all baby -- I look pregnant versus fat so I'm going with it. Our next appointment with her is January 2. Assuming the baby cooperates, we should be able to find out the sex of the baby!! YAY!!
My mom is in town this weekend and we've done a ton of baby-related items. It's been fun. On Friday, we went to Baby's R Us and added some more things to my wish list. I'm using the registry as away of keeping track of what I want to buy over the next few months. Yesterday, my mom, Emile and I took an excursion out to New Jersey to a baby furniture store, Cribs and Teen City in Paramus (we left the island! without flying or me going to work!). It was definitely an adventure. Since we don't own cars, we had to find alternative way to get there. To save money we decided not to rent a car but instead we took: 1) a cab to Penn Station; 2) a train from Penn Station to Secaucus Station in New Jersey; 3) another train from Secaucus Station to Radburn Station in Fairlawn, New Jersey; and 4) a cab from Fairlawn to Paramus (which getting a cab in NJ is not like hailing one in NYC -- we had to call for a cab, wait awhile for a guy to come from his house to pick us up and he didn't really know how to get where we were going). Then after we looked around the store, we repeated steps 1-4 in reverse after waiting 30 minutes for a cab to come get us -- I love NYC public transportation and missed it being in New Jersey!
It was worth the trip though. We found the crib furniture we were originally interested in (Munire Antigua) and realized we didn't really like it that much. But luckily, they had a number of other Munire cribs. We decided on the Munire Savannah set in ivory! We ordered the crib, combo dresser (short one in the photo), foam mattress and changing pad (they were having a deal on buying those four together). My parents bought us the crib part of the set which was wonderful and really appreciated!

Week 15
Our baby will be about the 4 1/3 to 4 2/3 inches by the end of this week. Between this week and week 17, our baby will have grown from about the size of a softball to the size of my hand stretched out. One of these days I should start feeling the baby move in flutters (usually happens between now and around 20 weeks -- hopefully I'm one of the women who feels it earlier!).
One nice thing about being in the second trimester is now I have to pee less! I actually sleep through the night without getting up 4-5 times to pee! Yay!
My next doctor appointment is this Wednesday. I'm looking forward to going in again. I hope Dr. Jin at least uses a doppler to hear the heartbeat -- it's such a reasurring sound! We should find out on Wednesday when we get go in to find out the sex of our baby! I can't wait.
Today Emile and I got our Christmas tree for our first Christmas married -- this time next year we'll be celebrating our first christmas with our baby!

Week 14 -- 2nd Trimester!
Our baby is now the size of my fist and by the end of this week will be close to the size of a softball. In the last week, I've become super hungry. I pretty much feel like I have to eat every 2 hours or so. It's amazing! I've never felt so attached to eating before. Although most people wouldn't be able to tell I'm pregnant in my regular clothes, I can tell more. Plus, my abdomen itches a lot now. I go through much more lotion than I used to. My clothes aren't fitting as well anymore and I'm much more comfortable now in maternity pants. I don't think I've "popped" yet as I can't see a bump when I lay on my back but I'm getting there. Soon!
I recently checked the lunar calendar for 2008. Looks like there is supposed to be a full moon on May 20th, 4 days before my due date. They say many women give birth on a full moon -- we'll have to see if I go early! Still such a long way off though.
